RISE IN GRAIN.

Melbourne, 17th.—A general rise has been experienced' in grain markets since last week.

Malting barley is firm at an advance of sd, and is now quoted at 5s 3d. Wheat is firm at 7s for shipping.

New Zealand oats have risen to 4s Id to 4s 3d for feeding, 1 and 4s 4d to 4s 5d for milling sorts. Prices are firmly maintained. '

Mr Parnell's Promise—A Denial. London, 17th.—In the House of Commons last night, the matter of the alleged understanding between the Government and Mr Parnell in regard to the latter’s release, was under discussion. Several Conservatives reaffirmed the truth of the statement which has been current regarding the compact between Mr Parnell and the Government, and denounced -the covenant as utterly infamous and degrading. Mr Gladstone, in-reply, hotly denied-the--truth of the assertions,'and challenged.proof of the alleged scOrapact.

Colonial Cricket at Home. London, 16th.;— The cricket match, Australians versus Oxford University, was ■resumed to-day at Oxford. The home team continued their first innings, which i closed for the total of 189, as against 862 iof the Australians. Shaw contributed the highest score, 78/ The University men followed on their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn had put to-gether-119 for 4 wickets. There was a large attendance at the ; match, and the ! weather was fine.' The Australians met i with a cordial reception when they went into the field.
