Hawera Public Buildings.

; A public meeting was held on Thursday evening to urge upon the Government the necessity of, erecting proper Court House, Land Office, and other buildings. His Worship the Mayor in the chair. His Worship in opening- the; meeting drew attention to the disgraceful buildings called the Court House and the Land Office. Hawera is fast becoming a large commercial centre, and they deserved something better as public buildings when nearly half a million of money had been put through the Land Office in the last three or four years. He considered that the member for the district ought’to do it ; and they should demand it as a right. Mr Pulford moved, “That our representative, Major Atkinson, be urged to place s sufficient sum upon the estimates for the purpose of erecting public buildings suitable for Court House, Land Office, &c., in Hawera, and also suitable to the' growing. importance of the borough and county.” He thought it was infra dig. that Hawera people had to. visit a second-rate place (.compared to Hawera) like Patea to attend, the District Court when Hawera was of greater importance. He looked forward to the lime when the Supreme .Court would be held in Hawera.

Mr Thomson seconded. Mr Farrington spoke feelingly of the present hovel of a Court House,

Mr Matthews made a vigorous speech on the same line ; and the motion was. then carried' unanimously. Mir Bate moved that the Borough Council be asked to send two members as deputation .to interview Ministers in Wellington on the subject. . This was debated rather warmly, some speakers contending- that Major 'Atkinson 1 knew their wants without a deputation being sent; and other speakers urging that nothing should be left undone. The motion was eventually carried.
