THE KING MEETING.
’ Mercer, April 29.—Half-a-dozeu, Euro- ; peans left by the Waikato train this morning. Mr Gittos, Wesleyan Missionary at Otamea, who has systematically encouraged his people to ignore the Maori King altogether. Owing to this, only two went down to Tawhiao’s meeting at Rewiti. Probably more natives from the vicinity of that settlement would have 'gone but for their poverty, and the Government not issuing free passes to them.- They had, no money to pay the railway fare and other expenses. Nothing- is- known- regarding Tawhaio’s-inten-tion at the meeting, but the absence of any member of the Mfhistay wili tfepri-re a great many of of its importance. It may turn out to be no more than a big feast.' Mr Bryce, Native Minister, sent Tawlliao a present of sportpowder, &c., which the latter accepted, and stated he would use it to shoot pigeons for the meeting. Although the opening of the meeting will take place on Monday, Ist May, it is probable, that speech-making may not. commence#fdr two or three clavs. ; / r
