A FLYING CART-HORSE.
A cart' horse, says the'' English 'Farmer ■, performed a yery extraordinary, feat at‘Nantwich sdihe : time ago. Near the railway station there a level crossing, protected by yery strong wooden gates six feet highi A carriage drawn: by two horses, containing ladies, . was; driving fast to catch the train, and on; passing ah emptycoal-cart, s the horse| drawing it took fright, or was not satisfied to be left behind. ,He started: off\a.t fall -speed, approached tlie railway gates, which were, closed for the ap-; preaching train, and took a iflying deap,, .cleared, the; .gates,; withon.t, dnjnry, apd landed at the other sic-e with the ; cart,| weighing 11 cwt.,... at his tail. • The: horse*.was uhinjured, and at work l the following day. Fortunately the signal box is just at hand, and the road level,! so that the signalman could slop the, approaching train, which was near.
NORMANBY ROAD GRIEVANCES. ; 1 (from our correspondent;) ” ; ; There, is satisfaction here at the manner in which the road betwecn ! Normahby and Hawera •is managed, - and* proposed to be ' dealt with. The County Council contend that the portion, of it between Brett’s, Corner and the railway crossing at Mr Winks’s paddock,, although a, main road, is not within their jurisdiction. The Town Board are undoubtedly precluded by the Act from expending any money on arterial -roads, and;. we- are . now therefore in the .miserable-position of a deserted foundjing,. disowned by everyone ; without paternity and without supervision. A comparatively/small -sura’ ’would repair this'piece of- road;, and no one can understand'-the, undisguised hostility of the County Council to; expend it. They are clearly entitled to do so, whateyei - : ingenious quibbles they may prefer, to the contrary. Though the weather lately has Been compai’atiyely dry, this particular piece of main road is so indented and broken as to be even now .impracticable fpf ordinary traffic. The winter rains wilLbe upon us immediately, and /the, oceanic puddle if will there form may ;b'e easier/ iraagliied than : described.'. Last year there / were frequent narrow’ 1 escapes /frbm broken; limbs, and if something is’ not done at once I shall more than probably have the melancholy task of chronicleing the death of some unfortunate settler. : '/■ / , 7 1 This state of things cannot and will not be endured.' We are a long-suffering people,- but- our patience is now'‘utterly exhausted. We will submit no longer to the- capricious -neglect- and - overvveening domination of : a-. Hawera .majority. I should, ! hope, be the very last to counsel anything like resistance of the law ; but really .it has. now come to this,-that the residents will be forced to fake'some unusual proceedings- It is only too painfully apparent’ that the : County Council have no ;i intention of expending rates beyond the leading thoroughfares to their own emb.iyo metropolis. Are the ratepayers of Norraanby to : contribute tp foreign establishments ; .whilst 5 -the approaches. t6 their own to wn by the imperial high way* are 1 ,al together /an iinpasssiblq quagmire; and a source of danger : and ' death to its people ?; ' /:/ : : / ~ ' '/; ~ : 1 There a're ominous whisperings—if no other redress is attainable—of the determination by the people in a body to resist the further payment of the County rateis. Tlie : expedient would be regrettable 7 in every Sense; It would depopnlarise an institution from which much was ex-, pected, arid’ which ought ‘to"'possess the ! sagacity to make.an impartial distribution of itsifavors. The Hawera County Council must look to its laurels, or its highhanded: and--unequal: administration will procure its destruction and.render it ridicuculous. ■ ■■ • r; ' ; • .
