WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday at Wanganui. Present: Messrs W. H. Watt (chairman), H. Sanson, G. S. Bridge, J. Ross, and J. M. Snelson. Leave of absence was granted to Sir W. Fox and Mr D. Coutts.

Waverley. —During repairs to school the committee were authorised to carry on teaching in one or other of the Town Halls. Isabella McDonald' was appointed pupil teacher. Mrs Houieman’s resignation was accepted, the Board regretting that she had hot previously provided herself with a residence and so have saved the necessity for resigning. Mr Bridge supported application made by the committee for permission to use Hill’s geography, as being a very excellent little work. The Inspector trusted the number of textbooks would not be multiplied, as parents already complained. The Board decided to apply to the Department for permission to use the book.

Manutahi. —Letter stated that the Committee were quite satisfied with the present teacher, and do not wish for any alteration. The Committee had been influenced in arriving at that opinion by comparing the Inspector’s report on the Manutahi school with his report on the other schools in the district. —Letter from James Christie, objecting to the legality of the Committee election on the grounds (1) that at the election Mr Corrigan and his son voted, only one of them being a householder; (2) that Messrs J. G. Ginger and D. Ginger voted, one of them only being a householder; f3) that one of the Mr Ginger’s is illegally.a member of Committee, not being a householder.—Resolved that Messrs, Coutts and Bridge bo appointed a Commiitco to enquire into the legality of the election of the Committee, and to report to the Board. The question of removing tho teacher was held over pending further inquiry. Patea. —Plans of the proposed addition to school were furnished by Mu Wright, the Board’s architect; and Mr Sanson moved, That the plans bo carried out when the Board is in funds. Seconded by Mr Ross, and carried.

Hawera.— Letter was received from Hawera applying for appointment of certificated assistant mistress ami pupilteacher, and recommending Miss McLeod in the latter capacity. The appointment of pupil-teacher was left with the Inspector, and it was decided that the matter of certificated assistant mistress should, be dealt with the first opportunity. , Isabella Smith, applicant for a pnpil-teachership at Hawera, to be informed that she must pass the fifth standard before she would be eligible. Whakahara. —Mrs Bremer’s resignation was accepted, and Miss Dewar was appointed,-.subject-to result of examination by Inspector. Manaia. —Mr Wilkie’s application for appointment to be forwarded to the committee.

Mr Sanson was appointed deputychairman during the absence of Mr Watt at the General Assembly, Teachers, The Board resolved, That all applicants for appointment under the Board be compelled to pass a preliminary, examination before the Inspector previous to . appointment. Mr Heenan, applicant, to be informed that he must comply with the above resolution.

The Board adjourned, until the last Tuesday in May.
