ROBBERY OF JEWELLRY.
Christchurch.—A robbery of jewellery was effected during Saturday night at the shop of Mr Montague, in -High street, the loss being estimated at £2OO. Among tho articles taken wese diamond rings, silver earrings, and pencil cases, wedding rings and keepers, old brooches, silver sleeve links, &c. Two shops next door were also entered but nothing much taken, and another a little lower dbwnj from which a couple of pipes and £8 in cash were taken.
The thieves also forced open Mr Banks’ corn store. They did not get much, as they missed a parcel.of silver on a window ledge. Mr Banks had taken the precaution to cross a valuable cheque, received late in the. day, so.the thieves were disappointed and had to leave it. They could not open the safe. At Wilkinson’s boot shop one of the thieves helped himself to a new pair of boots, and as he was fool enough to leave his old ones behind, the,detectives, will not have much difficulty in following up the clue. It is stated that the police'suspect 1 the robbery of a safe at Black Horse Hotel to be the work of the same individuals, as well as the robbery at the Terminus Hotel two years ago, when somebody walked off with a safe in broad daylight. Hitherto the police have not been able to get any evidence, though a certain person is strongly suspected to be the robber.
Family Quarrel. ; Christchnrch, 23rd.—A rather sejions stabbing case occurred at Leeston on, Thursday. A man named Young and his wife ; were quarrelling, 11 when 1 the latter’s brother interfered, and seriously handled Young. The latter then stabbed him three or four times, and Horne now lies in ar very critical state.
