Wellington.—The directors of the West Coast Railway (North Island) have agreed to commence work forthwith, The Engineer has been instructed to let out contracts for work on that portion of line partially constructed by Government. £IOO,OOO Dock for DunedinA lengthy conference was held to-day between members of the Port Chalmers Dock Trust, members of the House o( Representatives, City Council, Chamber of Commerce, &c. The Hon, Mr Oliver was also present. The conference was relative to the desirability ot urging Government to convey the necessary lands and endowments to enable the work of constructing the dock to be proceeded with. It was stated that a dock 600 feet long was estimated to cost £IOO,OOO. After discussion the following resolution was agreed to:—“ That this meeting stand adjourned for two months, to allow of time for the new dredge to be placed upon the bar and the result of its working ascertained.” It was explained that the strong moorings to place the dredge on the bar would be here in the course of a week. Fires. Nelson.—Afire at Hope on Sunday morning destroyed a house occupied by a shoemaker named Machares. Two of of bis children were sick, and were removed with some difficulty. Hokitika Gold Mining. Hokitika, 19th. —■ The Alhambra sailed this afternoon for Melbourne. The Bank of New Zealand shipped by her 25650zs of gold. A large number of cases were heard at the Warden's Court to-day, all relating to the Woodstock rush. The Premier Departing. Wellington, 19th.—Mr Hall and family are expected to leave for Canterbury on Friday, Attempted Burnings. Auckland, 19th.—There is reason to believe that an attempt was made last night to burn Captain Elliott’s house, in process of erection. Twice his dwelling has been burnt down on the eve of occupation. A nightwatchraan with a revolver has watched the present building since the carpenters commenced work. Sudden Deaths at Napier. Napier, 19th.—Mr W. C. McCormick, agent for the Union Steamship Company, died to-day. He was attacked with fever, and got wet through boarding the steamer on Saturday. Mr J. A. Isaacs, traveller for Messrs Joseph Nathan and Co,, of Wellington, died yesterday. Both gentlemen were highly respected, arid their deaths are deeply deplored. Grey and Whitaker. Auckland, 19th.—On the arrival of the Hinemoa with Sir George Grey, the Hon Mr Whitaker went aboard, and the steamer got out again for Wellington on the same tide. Small-Pox Precautions. Wellington, 19th.—A meeting of the Board of Health has been held with reference to the outbreak of smali-pox in Melbourne. It was decided that no action be taken in the matter until further information has been received.

Telephone Exchange. Dunedin, J9th.—The Telephonic Exchange is to be opened next week. Bodies found at Wreck. Auckland.—The body brought from Kaipara has been identified as that ot Captain McKenzie. The body buried and supposed to be that of McKenzie, is now believed to be that of Smith, the mate of the Rona. Bank of New Zealand Dividend. Auckland.—At the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand, the net profit was reported as £82,000, which with £24,900 brought forward from last half-year, is appropriated as follows : To dividend at the rate of ten per cent, per annum, and bonus of 5s per share, £75,000 ; added to reserve fund, £20,000; carried forward, £II,OOO. The total assets amount, to over twelve millions. The coin, bullion, and money on short call in London amounts to over two millions. The report and balance sheet were adopted.
