Auckland.—The Star states authoritatively there is no truth in the statement that Sir George Grey had communicated with a gentleman at Christchurch that his Excellency has asked him to form a Government, and that ho is prepared to submit names on arrival in Wellington. Sir George has not sent any telegram to Christchurch, nor the purport to any part of the the colony. Gambling. Thames. — A fruiterer named McDonald has been sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for allowing gambling on his premises. Liquor Law and “Infants” Auckland. —At the police court John Maxwell was charged with unlawfully supplying drink to John Wayraoutb, junior, in violation of the magistrate’s order prohibiting anyone supplying Waymouthwith drink for twelve months. Defendant’s solicitor, McKenzie, pleaded that the 169 th clause of the Act did not include localities beyond those mentioned, and the offence had been committed between Heleusville and Davgaville. The magistrate' reserved judgment. Wreck—Body Pound. Auckland —People working at the wreck of the Yixden, at Kaipara, discovered another body close to where Rona’s boat came ashore. It had been covered with sand, and was first observed by Maori dogs scratching.
