(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) , This Day. Bailway Prospect. Christchurch. —One of the promoters of the West Coast railway scheme has received information by cable from Sir J. Vogel to the effect that the prospects of an application to the London market m for floating the shares are favorable. Musical- : Christchurch. —It is rumored that Mr Wells is going to resign the position of organist at the cathedral. Local Option. Wellington, 14th.--—The local option, poll for the Epuni district gives • a majority in favour of increasing publicans, wine, accommodation, and bottle licenses. Licensing Poll. Christchurch. —-Polling for the Christchurch Soutlr Licensing District resulted in a vote in favour of the number of licenses being increased if necessary. One hundred and twenty-five ratepayers
out of 648 polled their votes. There was a good majority in each instance.
In'a Fix.
Christchurch!—There was to have been a trial of A. Hornsby and Son’s hedge-cutting machine yesterday, but it could not be got ont of the exhibition building, as the doors were too narrow. There was a fair attendance waiting to see the trial. Great Land SaleNapier.—Mr M. R. Miller’s sale of the Rissington estate has resulted in a total of nearly £50,000 being realised, but the bulk of the property was passed in. The average price was just over £3 15s an acre, the lowest realised here for a long time past. Since the sale several of the lots passed in have been sold, and others are under negotiation. Drink and Suicide. Auckland.—Michael Kaeffe. while suffering from delirium tremens , drowned himself in a creek at Kankapakapa, Bay of Islands. Racers for sale. Auckland.—Te Whctn, Amazon, and Yatapa were offered for sale to-day. The reserve was not reached, and they were withdrawn. Fever and Alarmist Reports. Napier.—Great indignation is expressed here at the accounts published in the Northern and Southern papers of alleged wide-spread and dangerous sickness here a short time since. There were a few cases of low fever, but the official returns show the deaths to have been fewer iban usual. The vital statistics prove Napier to be the healthiest town in New Zealand. Mr W, Colenso offers £2O. to start a fund to prosecute the authors of the account published, if it is possible to find them.
