Mr Blackett, Engineer-in-Chief, has been in this district inspecting the proposed route of the railway from Manutalii northward. He reached Patea to-day with Mr Holmes, District Engineer, and has been looking at the railway formation to be done at this end of the Waverley section.
We hear that the partnership existing between Messrs. Barker and Hurley at Manaia is likely to be dissolved, and that Mr Cowern has been requested to act as arbitrator in respect to certain matters in dispute.— Star.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company are about to erect a large and commodious warehouse and offices upon the three sections on Taupo Quay, Wanganui, just leased by the company from the Harbor Board.— Herald.
Rumors haying gone abroad of intending resignations on the part of the principal officers of the Wanganui Rifles, we are in a position to state that the report is entirely without foundation.— Herald.
The topic of‘the hour in Timaru and Dunedin is the levanting of J. M. Shepherd of Tiraam, grocer, whose proceedings are said to constitute one of the biggest swindles ever perpetrated in the Colony. His defalcations are reported to be something like £IO,OOO, of which £4OOO is claimed by Dunedin merchants.
