Frauds on Insurance.
Adelaide,—Another charge has been preferred against Messrs Barker, Hicks, and Forsyth, for conspiracy to defraud the Australian Mutual Provident Society.
Rent Arrears in Ireland. London, 31st.—la the House of Commons to-day, the Premier, in reply to a question, stated that Government would consider during the recess what should bo-done regarding the nonpayment of arrears of rent in Ireland.
Cloture i Discussion, i London, 31st.—The debate on the cloture proposals of Government is now proceeding in the House of Commons. During this ;i ,afternoon’s sitting, an amendment introduced by Mr Marriott, Liberal member for Brighton, condemning the proposal that cloture should be voteable by a simple majority of the House, was negatived on division by 313 to 279. MURDER of a MAGISTRATE. London, 31st,—News is to hand from Ireland that Mr Herbert; Magistrate at Kerry, has been murdered.
WOOL AND PRODUCE.
London,., 30tb.—Adelaide wheat ex warehouse remains at 64s 6d, and New Zealand ditto at 51s. Adelaide flour ex store,’ 87s 6d.' Australian tallow— Best beef 89s 6d, best rantton 44s 6d. At to-day’s wool auction 10,000 bales were offered, and a decidedly firmer tone was experienced.
RIOTS AGAINST TAXATION. Madrid, 30th.—Great, opposition is : being shown in many, parts of Spain to 1 the increase of taxation recently imposed by the Government; In Barcelonaespecially and in other places the feel-; ing against the demands of the authorities has run so high that serious riots have occurred, and the. military have had to be called out to suppress the disturbances.
BISMARCK AND THE CATHOLICS.
Berlin, 30 th.—The Prussian Diet; has voted a measure providing for enlargement of the scope of the ecclesiastical laws of Prussia. Colonial Produce. Sydney, this day. New Zealand ; wheat is quoted at 6s 6d per bushel; ! New Zealand oats 3s 7d ; maize, per 56ib, 6s 6d. ■
Increasing Revenue. i Sydney.—The revenue of New South Wales for March quarter shows an increase of £282,000, as compared with corresponding period of last year. The railway receipts show an increase” of £131,000, land rent increase £79,000, and Customs’increase £33,000. Illness of Prince Leopold.
London, 31st,—Prince Leopold is at present indisposed, and it is exj eclpd that his marriage will, in consequence have to be postponed. STEAMER - BURNT. 36 LIVES LOST. New York, 31st.—Telegrams are to hand from Memphis, Tennessee, reporting that, a steamer has been totally destroyed by fire at the wharf at that town, and that 85 persons'have been burned to death, mostly women and children.
