FROZEN MEAT. Report on the Protos’ Cargo.
The mutton shipped by the Protos, which left Melbourne on the 4th January, met with a most favorable market. On the opening of the cold chamber it was found that the quality of the meat was excellent, and the size of the carcases suitable; but the condition was bad in many of the carcases, which were also out of proper shape and discolored. As the freezing machines worked well throughout the voyage, it is thought the fault rests with the mode of shipping in Melbourne, and that the meat was exposed to the sun in lighters while being conveyed from the Australian Co.’s stores to the ship. A shipmentof sound carcases would have realised fully sevenpence a pound.
Blowing Up of Detective's Quarters; An attempt has been made to blow up the residence of a detective officer in Dublin. The fronts of three houses in the vicinity were wrecked. It was deemed advisable to take the dying depositions of a person who was seriously injured by the explosion.
