Champion Sculling

Wellington, 26th.—The sculling race between Hearn and Messenger, for £IOO a-side and the championship of New Zealand, took place yesterday afternoon. The distance was three miles and a-half, and a straight coarse from the point beyond Ngahauranga to Queen’s Wharf. The betting was slightly in favour of Hearn. The race took place at 5.30 p.m, the water being very calm, and was won easily by Hearn. Time 24min. 29secs. . Fatal Accident. Auckland.—A young man named Henry McQuaid, a laborer was found dead yesterday morning on the Onehunga road with the mark of a cart wheel across his head. He was last seen alive after midnight drnnk, and it is surmised he fell asleep on the road and was run over by one of the early milk carts. The driver of a milk cart says bis horses shied at the point where the body was found, but he took no notice of.the circumstances.

: Otago Harbor Dredge. . Dunedin, 26tb.—The first trial of the new steam dredge was made on Saturday. No hitch occurred in the working of the machinery. The dredge was set to work on a sand bank near Port Chalmers wharf, but the stuff was very stiff sand, and slow progress was made. When about i ,30Q tons. , were in; the hoppers, the dredge proceeded a mile outside the heads, and discharged it, every thing working properly.

Stabbing. Auckland,—A negro restauranteur, named Samuel Cole, bad an. altercation with anothercoloured man named Hall, on Saturday night, in the restaurant, and slabbed him twice :on .the head with a table knife. Hall' lost a quantity of blopd. , The wounds, are considered dangerous, and Cole has been arrested.
