HOME FOR THE AGED IN WELLINGTON.

At a meeting. of.the committee of the Wellington Benevolent Institution last week, his Worship the Mayor stated as one result of the discussion which took place upon the subject of establishing a home for aged and indigent persons, he had received the following letter: “■Wellington,’March 17, 1882. “ To his Worship the Mayor. “ Sir, —At the last meeting of the Benevolent Society you are reported to have said that you had sent circulars round to several influential citizens, asking their co-operation in the establishment of an asylum for the destitute aged persons of this city ; but that the response to your circular had not been \very favorable. 1 arn sorry for this. I may say that I did not receive one of the circulars, but nevertheless I have long been impressed with the necessity for such an institution —so much so, that ten years ago I placed a sum of money in my will for this special purpose. I have, however, thought it may he as well'to tako time by the’forelock, and make use of the money during my lifetime. A . . M A/ *■ , i

“ I therefore beg to state that I shall be happy to give the sum of £IOOO towards the erection of a suitable building,! providing the Corporation will grant asufficient quantity of land tor the purpose. If this is conceded, then I shall be prepared' to give one-fourth of the above-named sum to the Treasurer of the Benevolent Society as soon as a contract is signed for the building, and the remainder in bills of equal proportions at three, six, and nine months. Should the cash be required before the bills mature, I shalbbe glad to pay for discounting’ them, So that the Society; may have the full benefit of the £IOOO, ■—Yours faithfully, A.”
