The formation of the main street and footpaths through our township is at last commenced in earnest, Mr J. Hughes being the successful tenderer. Mr Hughes has lost no time in getting to work at his contract, and has already a party of men at work, so that in a few weeks time there will be a considerable change for the better in the appearance of the township. Good things like troubles often come in a heap, the latest idea being a scheme of tree planting along the main street. It is to be hoped this will he carried out, and not allowed to drop.
A seat on the Town Board is now vacant, through the resignation of Mr J. B. Taylor. The election for the vacant seat is called for the 4th April, nominatiens to close on 31st inst. Ratepayers should look around for the best man to represent them, A poll is to be held on sth April, under the Licensing Act, to determine whether the number of licenses within the district may be increased or not.
Considerable inconvenience is often felt through there being no Registrar of Births and Deaths in the district, it being at present included in the Patea Registration district. I think it only requires bringing before the notice of the Government to get a separate district gazetted and a registrar appointed. A public meeting might bo called for the purpose of considering the matter.
It is the intention of a number of our local Cavalry corps to take part in the forthcoming Easter encampment, several meetings having been held to discuss the matter. The Waverley Rifles have decided to break up, and as soon as the anna and accoutrements are returned to store will cease to exist.
