HAWERA RACES.

(from our correspondent.)

The Egmont Racing Club'meeting which was held yesterday in a paddock about two miles from Hawera, was attended by about 800 people, Wanganui and New Plymouth being well represented. On account of the distance from Hawera, everybody attended either on horseback or in buggies. There would no donbt have been a much larger attendance had the weather been more favorable. Slight showers fell occasionally during the day. The course was a very passable one although rather small, being only three-quarters of a mile round. Owing to the few entries for the different events the sport was poor. In fact it was , not worth going any distance to see. The capper does not seem to have studied the capabilities and previous performances of the horses, every race except hack being a certainty. Mr Poole hadthe sole working of the totalisator, and did a good trade, £1224 being put through during the day. The largest dividend was £29, on the first hack race. The Opnnaki A.C. brass band, under. Mr Robert Dixon, attended, and helped greatly to cheer low-spirited visitors. The officers of the Clnb gave general satisfaction, and did their utmost to make the meeting pass off satisfactorily.
