Berlin, 23rd.—A telegram has been received by the Emperor William from the Czar of Russia conveying the latter’s warmest greetings on the occasion of his Majesty’s birthday.
Reduction in Bank Discount
London. 23rd.—The Bank of England has to-day reduced its rate of discount to 3 per cent.
Russia & the Colonies. EXCITEMENT in MELBOURNE.
Melbourne, this day.—-The Age today asserts the genuineness of information given yesterday regarding Russian designs upon the Colonies, and publishes documentary evidence in support of Bryant’s statements. The Argus this morning states that the Age's information is a palpable hoax, and completely fallacious, and that Bryant was employed by Admiral Aslanbegoff on matters altogether unconnected with Australian defences. The affair has caused great excitement here. Safety of Missing Ship. Melbourne, this day.—lntelligence is to hand that the ship Sobraon, bound from Melbourne to London, for whose safety fears were entertained, arrived at Capetown on the 23rd instant. Exaggerated Reports from Mount Brown Diggings. Sydney, this day.—lntelligence is to hand that supplies are now arriving .at Mount Browne. The reported distress amongst diggers is proved to have been exaggerated. The supply of water is short, and is really the only great want.
