The Bar Improving.

It is interesting to learn that a marked improvement is taking place in the channel at the entrance to the Patea river. Whether this is due wholly or only in part to the removal of the eelweirs may be matter of opinion. The fact is clear that the improvement has followed immediately on the removal of the weirs, and that the change is caused by the average scour having more effect in clearing a straight channel and reducing the west spit. The Pilot’s report, dated March 13th, was read to the Harbor Board yesterday as follows :

“ The south channel has closed np, and the scour has forced a straight channel .again, with a depth on bar of 10 feet at springs. The width from the breakwater to the west spit has also improved greatly, being now 87 feet, with an average depth of 16 feet at springs along the breakwater. A little repair has been done to the protection works. No damage has been done to the breakwater in launching the steamer Wakatn over it (the Board having given permission for this). The breakwater has stood this test remarkably, the weight being over 100 tons on a very small space. Twenty-three vessels crossed the bar since last report ; two crossing at night.”
