PATEA DAILY MAIL. Published every Evening, Price Id. CIRCULATION nearly 600 DAILY. Average circulation last quarter, 510.
Saturday Evening, March 18, 1882.
Delivered every Evening by mounted messengers —at Hawera by 7-30 o’clock, at Normanby by 8-15, at Manaia and Waimate Plains by 8-30, and Southward at Waverley (for train) by 6 o’clock.
St. Patrick’s-day service was held at the Catholic Church ; Father Grogan celebrating mass, and preaching a
special sermon
The Wesleyan minister just appointed to Hawera, the Rev. T. F, Jones, will preach to-morrow in Patea. Received late, letter on comparative cost of goods to Manaia.
Reading Rooms are apt to raise fearful questions of freedom versus propriety. A paper advocating what is called Free
Thought was noticed on the library * table of the Patea Institute. A reader appealed to a member of the Committee, who ascertained that the paper was placed there without the Committee’s knowledge, and therefore requested the Librarian to put it away until the Committee could consider the question of its suitability. But that does not get rid of the difficulty ; for when the committee have to take the responsibility of permitting or excluding papers of a distinctly atheistical tendency, there may not be unanimity of opinion, and what may follow is painful to contemplate. It is clear that debatable questions of this kind should be referred to the Committee for some ruling one way or the other. If they cannot be unanimous as to where the line shall be drawn, let them at least agree to abide by the principle that a majority shall rule. Compromise is better than differing outright. Messrs D. Bassett and J. McLean, of Patea, have got the Normanby cattleyards contract, at £l4O 12s. During the absence of Mr Wray, R.M., Mr W. L. Dean is appointed to act as deputy Sheriff in Patea district. The Comedy and Burlesque Company, who have been playing in Wanganui, will perform to-night and Monday in the Patea Harmonic Hall. If the company are as strong as the bill represents, they should be well worth seeing. To-night’s bill comprises “ Caste,” the favorite London society comedy which was played so long at the Prince of Wales theatre in Tottenham street; followed by Henry J. Byron’s “ Somnambula,” a successful burlesque on the well known opera. The company performed at Waverley last night to a “ racy ” audience.
Mr Speight, with a company of Good Templars, has purchased the Thames Advei'tiser for £SOOO. Nearly all the shares are paid up.
