This Day.
QUEENSLAND. FIRE AND FLOODS
Brisbane, 13th.—A serious fire occurred to-day at the office of the Brisbane Telegraph newspaper. The machine-room was completely destroyed, and the remainder of the building considerably damaged. Owing to the recent heavy rains, serious floods have occurred in Clermont district. The estimated loss is £4OOO.
Government for Natal
Capetown, 10th.—The Natal Legislative Council has dissolved, with the object of testing public opinion in the colony in regard to the offer recently made by Earl Kimberley, Secretary for State for the colonies, that Natal should be conceded responsible government.
English Cricketers v. Australia. LONG SCORING.
Melbourne, 13th.—The cricket match between the All England Eleven and the Auslralian Team was resumed today. The weather was fine, but the attendance of spectators only moderate. The Australians continued their first innings, and were all disposed of for a total of 300. The following are the Australian scores:—A. Bannerman, c, 37; Murdoch, b, 82; Horan, c, 20; Massie, c, 19; Giffen, c, 14; McDonnell, c, 53; Blackham, c, 6; Garrett, c, 10; Palmer, c, 34 ; Spofforth, not out 3 ; sundries, 13. The Englishmen then commenced second innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day, had put together 234 for the loss of only two wickets. The following are the scores : —Ulyett, c, 64 ; Barlow, run out, 54 ; Selby, not out, 48 ; Bates, not out, 52.
Large Loss by Fire. Adelaide, this day.—The loss occasioned by a recent fire on the premises of Mr Marshall, draper, Handley street, is estimated at fully £70,000.
TRAMWAY COLLISION. Sydney, this day.—A collision occurred last evening on the tramway to Camden, and several persons were more or less seriously injured.
Carter has been rwarded £257 for injuries sustained at the tramway collision which occurred some time ago.
Egypt and the Canal. Grave fears are felt that serious complications will arise in consequence of the policy pursued by the Egyptian Ministry. It is rumored that they are about to take steps to fortify the Suez Canal.
The Transvaal Trouble. Native tribes in west Transvaal refuse to submit to taxation imposed upon them by the Boers, and are offering armed resistance to the tax-collectors. The Boers are mobilising forces with a view to coerceing the tribes, and hostilities are imminent.
