Carbine Champion.
Thames.—Gordon, the carbine champion, arrived last night) the Volunteers and Fire Brigade turning out to weleorae him. The Mayor gives a dress ball tonight.
Mr Bryce.
Thames.—Mr Bryce is expected to visit this district at the end of this week.
Licensing and Local Option.
Christchurch. The licensing committee for Christchurch South refused to consider an application for the extension of hotel licenses to midnight, until the annual meeting. They also gave the same warning to publicans who subordinated the general business of an hotel to the bar trade, that the committee for Christchurch North had given. There are four committees for Christchurch.
Wanganui. Dates are fixed for taking a poll on the question of increasing the number of licenses. All the wards will vote in April.
Burglary.
Dunedin.—The Harbour Board office has been burglariously entered since Saturday night, but no cash rewarded the burglar.
ALLEGED BOTTLING FRAUDS. Dunedin.—Messrs Ester and Low’s liquor vaults have been examined by the Customs authorities, and a report has gone forth that they were to be prosecuted for using fraudulent labels. Everything was found right, and the injurious report is untrue. Forty-eight cases of brandy have been seized from Messrs Wilkin and Co., liquor manufacturers, and it is understood that a prosecution is pending against them.
Forging a Cheque. Wellington,—J. C. Huysman has been committed for trial on a charge of forging and uttering a cheque, value £4. Old Soldiers’ Claims. Wellington. The Volunteer Land Scrip Commission leave for Auckland on Thursday, commencing proceedings next Monday. Drunk on the Railway. Oamaru.—A man named Peter McKenna, supposed to be from Makihihi was caught in the cow-catcher of the engine of a special train bringing the mail last night, near Oamaru, and was so severely injured that he is not expected to live. He had been drinking, and had fallen across the railway line.
