Refuge for Homeless Jews.

A cable message says . The United States have offered a welcome to the Russian Jews who are fleeing from antrocious outrages, and who have sought refuge there. Free grants of lands have been offered to those desirous of settling j and every effort has been made to relieve their miserable condition. FLOODS in AMERICA. Washington.—Most disastrous floods have occurred in Arkansas and adjoining States in South America, owing to the overflow of the Mississippi and its tributaries. An enormous extent of country lias been flooded. Thousands of homes have been devastated, and great loss of life and stock resulted. It is estimated that fully fifty thousand persons have been rendered destitute, and that in the State of Arkansas alone 20,000 head of cattle have been drowned.

A cable message says the U.S. Congress has voted a sum of 60,000 dollars (about £12,000) to defray the fees charged by medical men who attended President Garfield, during his last illness. Pension to General Grant. The United States Congress has voted a pension of 10,000 dollars (£2000) to General Grant, on account of his distinguished services to the nation during the civil war. DEBATE ON BRADLAUGH. London, 7th.—ln the House of Com- ■ mons last night, the question of Mr Bradlangh’s admission again came up for consideration, in view of his reelection for Northampton. Sir Stafford Northcote renewed his opposition to the admission of Bradlaugh. An amendment to the motion before the House was then introduced by a Liberal member, to provide for a modification of the existing statute so as to make it optional on the part of newlyelected members to swear the oath or make an affirmation. The debate continues. Obituary. London, 7th.—The death of Mr Edwin James, the well-known ex-Q.C., who some years ago was disbarred, is reported to-day. SALE OF RACING STUD. Brisbane, this day.—The racing stud of the late Sir Joshua Bell has been sold for £IO,OOO. Addresses to the Queen. London, 7th.—ln both Houses of Parliament this evening, an address to the Queen was passed, expressing .gratification at Her Majesty’s escape from the recent attempt on her life.
