CHINESE FESTIVAL IN WELLINGTON.

The Chinese residents of Wellington celebrated their New Year on the 18th by a series of festivities peculiar to these orientals. The number of immigrants from “ Fair Cathay” in Wellington is small, and consists, perhaps, of about 30 storekeepers, hawkers, and market gardeners, whose headquarters are in Taranakistreet. Here high holiday was held, but Wellington John, unlike his compatriots in other parts of the colonies, was conservative and inhospitable to a degree. With closely barred doors, the disciples of Confucius kept up their festivities, and sturdily refused to allow barbarians to cross their thresholds, and inquisitive Europeans were compelled to rest content with the “ sound of revelry” going on within, chief among which were the sounds fo the one-string fiddle and the alto voices of the vocalists. Business was entirely suspended during the day, but, owing to the vigour with which the police regulations were observed, the usual liberal discharge of crackers, so dear to the celestial heart, and so generally observed in other places, was dispensed with.
