WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
At the Education Board meeting in Wanganui on Tuesday, there were present, Messrs W. H. Watt (chairman), G. S. Bridge, J. W. Baker, J. Notman, G. M. Snelson, and Sir W. Fox. APPOINTMENT COMMITTEE. An application was before the committee at last meeting asking for the appointment of a male certificated teacher at Manutahi. Letter since received from the new committee requested that no change be made till after further inquiry. Letter from Patea stated that the attendance was now 180, and steadily increasing, and requesting the appointment of a pupil teacher. The names of six candidates were sent up, and the Board agreed to appoint Miss Hirst, fifteen years, passed Sixth Standard, subject to the approval of the inspector. Pi Thurston, applicant for employment as pupil teacher is to be recommended to the committee. Mrs Horniman, E 2, applying as an assistant mistress, will be kept in view for a possible vacancy at Waverley. MANAIA. On the motion of Mr Sanson, seconded by Sir W. Fox, it was resolved, That Messrs Yorke, Sutherland, Glenn, Dingle, and Mitchell be appointed School Commsssioners for Manaia. HAW ERA. On the motion of Mr Sanson, seconded by Mr Sir W. Fox, it was resolved, That Messrs McFarlane, Hobbs, Symes, Pitcher, and Bate be appointed School Commissioners for Hawera., NOMINATIONS FOR THE BOARD. The following gentlemen were nominated for the vacant seats Sir W. Fox, Messrs H. Sanson, D. Coutts, W. H. Lash, D. H. Macarthur, and Dr Rockstrow. RATEA. Letter from Patea, enclosing names of the newly-elected School Committee. It was resolved that the committee’s attention be called to the 59th section of the Act under which Mr Williams’ election was illegal. Letter was also received in reference to accounts of the late committee, and High School fees. WAVERLEY, Communications from the Chairman of the meeting called for the election of committeemen, stating that the following gentlemen were declared elected: Messrs Mason, Davis, Bridge, Macdonald, Caldwell, Jackson, and Hair. An objection to the ruling of the Chairman at the meeting was enclosed. On the motion of Mr Notman, seconded by Mr Sanson, the ruling of the Chairman was upheld. Another letter, containing a somewhat similar protest was read, and it was resolved that a copy of letter be forwarded to the Chairman. A letter was read from Messrs
McForlane and Swinbonrne, of Waverley, offering to erect additions to the Waverloy school-room for the sum of £Ol. It was resolved that the Secretary inform the Waverloy School Committee that Messrs McFarlane & Co.’s offer be rejected as excessive, and that fresh tenders be called for the work. The Secretary’s annual report was read, received, and adopted. The Inspector’s report was taken as read, and ordered to be printed.— Abridged from Wanganui Chronicle.
