WEST COAST TRUSTEE.
The Wellington Post says: Mr T. Mackay, the newly-appointed Trustee under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act, has visited the reserves set apart for the Parihaka natives, with the view of making early arrangements for leasing them, as authorised by the Act above quoted. We understand that there are many Europeans desirous to lease and cultivate portions of these reserves, and that the natives themselves are very anxious that the leasing should bo arranged as soon as possible, they haying become awake to the vast, benefits they will derive from the transaction. Judging from present appearances, the West Coast natives will, ere very long, become almost “ rich beyond the dreams of avarice,” through the utilisation of their reserves, while at the same time European settlement will be immensely promoted, and the natives will still retain in their own hands ample lands for their personal cultivation, &c. So far the outcome of the West Coast Native difficulty bids fair to prove most satisfactory.
