STEAM SHIPPING ENTERPRISE.
A private letter to Nelson from Sydney says : It is rumored in Sydney that the s.s. Bowen has been purchased by the Union S.S. Company, and that their new steamer Hauroto will be brought out from England by Capt. Sinclair, and placed in the China trade under the command-of Capt. Darke, formerly in the Panama Company’s service, and at present in charge of the Bowen. Captain Chatfield of the Ringarooma will proceed to England to bring out the Wairarapa. The Manipouri will bring out compound engines for the Penguin, which is to undergo a complete overhaul and receive several improvements. The Rotorua will probably be placed in the West Coast line, running between Wellington and Manukau, via Nelson and other intermediate ports. The purchase of the A.S.N. Co.’s wharf and premises in Sydney for £35,000 is generally considered a judicious and favorable purchase for the Company.
