BOROUGHS.

On the 3rd April, 1881, there were 14 boroughs in the North Island, The population was then in round numbers: Wellington, 20,000; Auckland and Parnell, 20,000; Thames, 5,000 ; Wan-

ganui, 5,000 ; Napier, 6,000; New Plymouth, 3,000. The rest varied from Marten (G62), to Masterton (2,241). The names of those not yet mentioned are Onehunga, Gisborne, Hamilton, Palmerston North, and Greytown.

In the South Island there were 51, Dunedin with eight adjacent, 4=3,000 ; Christchurch and Sydenham, 24,000; Invercargill, Nelson, and Oamaru, each about 6,000 to 8,000; and the rest varying from Winton (230) to Timaru with 3,917.

The great need that exists for some proper map or directory may be guessed from the fact that with all the means at our command we have failed to discover the whereabouts of two—namely, Avenal and Gladstone.
