Prospects of the Exhibition.

Christchurch, Bth.—So well have British exhibitors taken up our cxliibiton that whereas only 76 bays were originally set apart for them 40 have already been applied for, and it is expected that they will want 60. This docs not include machinery. The foreign courts are looking up well. Switzerland will occupy more space than at Sydney, and its agent has special instructions to report upon the capabilities of New Zealand as a field for Swiss immigration. Italy, Austria, and Japan, will make a tine show, the latter being expected to be one of the sights of the exhibition, and India will, be represented.

Dunedin Races.

Dunedin.—Entries and acceptances were made last night for the Dunedin Jockey Club Autumn Meeting to be held on Feb. 23, 24. and 25.

Teetotallers and Licensing.

Dunedin, 9th. —The nomination for Dunedin South Licensing Disttict took place to-day. Nine candidates were proposed, of whom three, it was understood, were by the licensed victuallers, and five by temperance organisations.

Auckland. —The Licensed Victuallers and Good Templars are conferring as to a common ticket for licensing committees containing the names of men of moderate views.

Sculling Match.

Wellington.—lt is expected that a sculling match between Messenger and Hearn will be arranged. The latter wishes the distance to be miles.

Criminal Assault.

Masterton.—John Burke was to-day committed for trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl aged 10 years.

Canterbury Produce,

Christchurch, 9th.—Business in the grain market continues without appreciable change, and is likely to remain so until deliveries of grain set in. Christchurch retail prices:—Fresh butter lOd per lb, cheese 6J to lOd per lb, beef 2d to 6d per lb, mutton 2d to 4d per lb, lamb 2s 5d to 3s per quarter (6d per lb), ham lOd per lb, bacon 9d per lb. Lyttelton Graving Dock. Christchurch, 9th. The Graving Dock at Lyttelton was finished to-day so far as the masonry is concerned, and the large number of workmen were paid off. The occasion was celebrated by a considerable display of bunting. The engine-house and the erection of the engines will be finished in about 10 days, but the deck will not be thoroughly completed for some months owing to delay in the arrival of caissons. Typhoid FeverAuckland.—There is an outbreak of typhoid fever at Pukekohe, and several deaths have occurred. There are several cases in Auckland Hospital.
