Reuter's Despatches to Patea Daily Mail This Day. Bradlaugh and the Oath. ANOTHER DIFFICULTY. London, Bth,—ln the House of Commons last evening, Mr Bradlangh appeared and advanced towards the table. Sir Stafford Northcote, leader of the Conservative Opposition, rose and moved that he should not be allowed to take the oath as a member of the House. Sir Vernon Harcouit thereupon moved “the previous question,” and spoke at some length, advising the House to allow Bradlangh to take the oath subject to a final decision of the question in the law courts. Mr Bradlangh, speaking from the bar of the House, solemnly declared that the oath would be binding on his conscience. A lengthy debate ensued, and finally the motion to proceed with “the previous question ” was rejected by a majority of 58 in a full House. Sir Vernon Harcourt’s motion was supported by Mr Gladstone and other members of Government.
