A new librarian for the Patea Institute was appointed last evening. There were four applications ; that of Mr H. Chadwick being accepted. He commenced duty to-day. The first necessity is to take stock, so that the committee, in ordering new books, may know what selections to make. The Borough Council met last evening by adjournment, and after again considering applications for the office of engineer and surveyor, they elected Mr E. H. Locker, from Tennent’s pit to Victoria street 2s 6d, south of that Bs 9d ; from heads to Victoria street 2s 9d, nrothward 4s 3d, T, Collopy, from Tennent’s pit 3s 6d, from heads 3s 7d. The tender of Mr Keys was accepted. The Bank of Victoria pays a dividend for the past half-year of per cent. The Wellington Harbor Board has resolved to provide new wool pressing plant on an extensive scale to meet growing shipping requirements of the port. Mr J. A. Fairfax, of the Sydney Morning Herald, arrived by the mail steamer, and it is said intends making a tour through this colony. Fifty of the Union Sash and Door Company workmen, lately locked out at Auckland, have got work, some in the Auckland Timber Company’s and other mills.
