(per united press association.) This Day. Accident to the Macgregor. New Plymouth.—The steamer Macgregor arrived in the Wailara river last night from Manukan. This morning at an early hour it was discovered she was rapidly filling with water. Measures were taken to discover the cause, when it was found she had a hole in her bottom. She is supposed to have settled on a snag. The cargo is being discharged from her in a very damaged state. Schooner QuarantinedNew schooner Nelson, fourteen days from Sydney, arrived yesterday off Waitara. She is quarantined for two days. MAN BURNED TO DEATH. Wellington, 2nd.—News is to hand of a man named Finn being burned to death at Mr J. Perry’s station, Upper Taueru. The body was found this morning in a gully, the scrub being burned all round it. Grain in Canterbury. Christchurch, 2nd.—The average of crops in the Ashburton district is estimated to range, according to locality, from 15 to 30 bushels per acre for wheat, 12 to 35 for oats, and 12 to 35 for barley. Sir George Grey from Kawau.. Auckland, 2nd. —Sir G. Grey has come from Kawau re the Otago runs business. It is variously stated that he will interview the Premier, consult the Auckland members, and call a public meeting on the subject. Wellington Races. Wellington Racecourse.—Beautiful weather, but not more than 600 people on the course. Magnolia was scratched for the Railway Stakes, which was won by Mischief, Luna second, and Lady Emma third. This was a slashing race, Hutt Park Handicap, Lady Emma 1, Mavis 2, Slander filly 3. Time, 2mins. Won by Haif a head. ENGLISH CRICKETERS. Auckland. —At the cricket match today, the Englishmen lost 1 wicket for 4 runs, Barlow being bowled for 3.
