GOVERNMENT and ROAD WORKS.
In reply to a County Council deputation at Hokitika as to making roads and settling country, Mr Rolleston said that in future the functions of the General Government and local bodies would have to be clearly defined. One of the first objects was to open the main roads from one end of the Island to the other. Some £16,000 had been voted for this purpose in the district. His view was that the principal evils on the West Coast Goldfields proceeded from isolation. If they could get connected with Otago, Canterbury, and Nelson, the isolation of the district would pass away, and permanent settlement would be promoted. He believed there was a good field on the Coast for settlement. He had been over the country, and had seen people struggling on worse land in other parts. He thought little works should be left to local bodies, and Government ought to spend money in making roads to isolated spots. Each undertaking should be complete from somewhere to somewhere, and should develop some new country. Where auriferous country was not developed, communication should be between places which ought to be joined. .
