Wool, Skins, Tallow
A new form of monthly circular is being issued at Christchurch by the N.Z.L. & Mercantile Agency Co., giving market quotations at different centres in this colony . The following are extracts ; WOOL, In the absence of any particular information from London—save that trade is brisk in the Manufacturing Districts, and that good competition with firm rates are anticipated at the series to be held next month —there has not been much disposition to operate on speculation. The several auction sales during the month have, however, passed off with spirit, at prices fully equal to those current at the opening of the season. Dunedin. —Nine public sales of wool have been held during the present season, at which abent 3,500 bales have passed the hammer. Competition has been fairly active for all descriptions, excepting heavy and coarse sorts, and prices for the latter shows a declining tendency.
Christchurch. —The third series of sales for the current season were held on the 17th and 18th instants, when 3,277 bales were submitted. Our catalogue comprised 1,244 bales, chiefly merino clips. 747 bales were quitted at full rates, the highest figures reached being ll£d for 76 bales greasy merino, of the Worlingham clip, purchased by the local manufacturing company, and 9£d for 42 bales greasy half-bred, from the Highfield estate, Kirwee. Since the sales, we have placed 297 bales privately. Under keen competition from the representatives of foreign and local manufacturers, prices are well sustained .
Wellington. —During the month, we have submitted between 700 and 800 bales, and about 300 pockets, of various descriptions. Clean light cross-bred in the grease has ranged from Bsd to 9|d per lb., though for one parcel exceptionally well-grown, and light in grease, we secured the satisfactory figure of lOd. Competition continues good, and parcels coming forward meet with ready sale.

We have sold merinos at 2s 6d to 6s 6d, cross-breds 2s 8d to 5s lOd, green pelts Is Id to 2s Id, and lambskins Is 4d to 2&. HID ICS. The Home markets ha velately displayed signs of weakness in r-spect of Doth hides an : leather, and a sympathetic feeling is manifest throughout the Colony. Christchurch. —The demand has not been so brisk, and sales can only be effected at a reduction of £d on last, month’s rates. Dunedin. —Sales are difficult to effect, except at lower prices, as full supplies are coming to band, and the demand is slacker. Wellington. —Our fortnightly sales have been well attended, and the various lots have been placed at up to 4£d per lb for salted parcels of medium weights, free from offal. Compact heavy hides of good substance are somewhat scarce, and would doubtless command an advance upon this quotation. Auckland. —A steady demand from local manufacturers lias been satisfied at 3|d to 4£d per lb., according to weight and condition.
TALLOW AND FAT. The recent advance in London—advised by cable—lias induced a good demand for shipping parcels, but the quantity coming forward is readily absorbed by local manufacturers. . Latest advices from Homo, however, are not so favorable, a sharp drop being reported. Christchurch. —There have been no public offerings of tallow, but the weekly sales of fat have gone off with spirit at full rates, considering the heated state of much submitted.
