The police have entered the cottage (which was closed up) by forcing a window. In one room they found a candle alight amid a heap of matches and Wood —in fact several candles were stuck together to last a given time. The floor was saturated with kerosine, and the candle had nearly burnt down to the point of a general flare-up when the police discovered the plot. The light, too, was carefully shaded from outside view, and the “ artist” had worked out his plan with cunning completeness.
