About Railway Opening.
It is known that all the plans for the Waverley-to-Patea section have been “ in” some time, and the pnzzle is to account for the long delay in completing specifications and calling for tenders. This is one of those railway sections that conld be let conveniently in two portions, thereby placing the tenders within the means of a larger number of contractors in the district. The formation is light, taking it as a whole ; the bridge across Whennaknra river and the catting aronnd Patea harbor bluff being the heaviest works. It should be easy to complete this section before Christmas next, for by catching the wool season there would be a good start with traffic which would help largely to make the line immediately remunerative. Another strong reason is that the line to Manntahi would not be standing idle, as it otherwise can hardly be remunerative if worked separately. By expediting the Waverley section, it would be easy and sensible to open the line through-from Waverley to Manntahi, and so connecting at once with the south. Two things will settle the native difficulty on this coast for all time. Keep away Te Whiti 2 years. Secondly, finish and open the railway quickly, and then Te Whiti may return and find himself knocked out of time. He will ■be as helpless as Mrs Malaprop whe% the old dame tried to pash back the Atlantic, with her mop.
