That Leisurely Railway.

It is not true that the railway contract between Waverley and Patea is postponed till after the next public loan. There is every probability that the contract will be given out before the end of next year but one. It was said, and some persons believed the statement because it was said officially, that tenders would be invited before the middle of January. I has escaped attention that January may mean, in the official sense, not this particular January, but some other. Tiris is a simple explanation of the seeming breach of faith. Supposing that the Government have not forgotten all about this railway, and supposing they are aware of the near completion of the formation towards Manutahi, and supposing they learn by accident that a brand new locomotive is lying like disjointed lumber at Patea wharf, and supposing they can be reminded that promises were made during the election contest which have not been fulfilled, will the Government consider that it is time to make show of thinking about beginning to get out the specifications for this Waverley-to-Patea section ? It is earnestly to be hoped there will be no hurry. The public can tolerate a good deal, but any appearance of haste in a matter of this kind is much to be deprecated. Something might get broken in the scurry. The true way to make railways is to promise them in haste, and make them at leisure. That is why this is called the leisurely railway.
