Working New County.

(from otjr correspondent,) In addition to the business of the Hawera County Council, reported yesterday in the Dailt Mail, a number of important details were dealt with for putting the new county into working order. The chairmen of Road Boards were to be requested to furnish copies of their rate.books for ike Council, and as soon as received, notice is to be given of the intention of the Council to levy a rate of Is in the pound, from October 1, 1881, to March 31, 1882. Mr Hunter thought Is would be too heavy. Mr Livingstone urged that it was necessary for one body to levy Is, bo as to secure a good subsidy. Mr Inkster thought it would be much better and cheaper in the long run to make a good job of the roads with sufficient money, than to only half-patch them. The point was much debated as to whether the. rail would be Is for the term, or only 5-12ths of a shilling for the five months. A legal opinion is to obtained. The New Plymouth hospital is to be written to as to the terms for admitting patients from this county. The Minister of Public Work is to be asked to send some one to report upon the relative qualities of the gravel in the Mangawhero and Waiugongoro pits, before laying rails into either. Messrs Partridge, Livingstone, Yorke, and Hunter were appointed to settle Surfacemen are to be at once put on the Mountain and Main South Roads. Applications from persons willing to keep a pound at Stratford or Ngaire are to be invited. It was resolved that the Chairman write to the Colonial Secretary for bound copies of the statutes from 1876, as it seems that reference has to be made to all of them. Tenders are to be invited for repairs to gravelling between Waiugongoro and Manawapou, and on the HaweraNormanby road. Mr McGovern applied for leave to make bricks on a gravel reserve at the Waingongoro. Application to stand over till next meeting, and the chairman and Mr Yorke to submit conditions of occupancy then. A tender of £IOO for the dog tax was received, but was not thought , sufficient, and it was therefore resolved to invite applications for the post of collector who is to be paid by results, viz.: Is a head for each dog registered up to 100,' Is 6d a head for the second 100, 2s a head for the third 100, and so on. Estimated number of dogs, seven to eight hundred. Mr Inkster wanted to upset the 10s tax, but. the resolution could not be rescinded at that meeting, and he omitted to give notice for the next meeting. Members coming from a distance are ( to receive 10s 6d a day for attendance. Council adjourned till the 30th inst. when a special and ordinary meeting will be held.
