KAKARAMEA.
(from our correspondent,) Monday. Although the public generally feel an interest in our railway, few persons know much about actual operations. I paid a visit to the works on Mr J. Burke’s property, and was agreeably surprised at the progress made. Here a deep cutting, the deepest on the line between Patea and Manutahi, is being formed. Tons of earth, at a present depth of 30 feet, are excavated daily, and tipped down an immense gully, each load seeming to make no difference, yet sloAvly filling up the yawning gap. The nature of the ground will not allow of this contract being finished for some months, a considerable quantity of hard sandstone having to be disposed of. This is unfortunate for the contractors ; but if they have a run of fine weather, and peg away as they have been doing, there will not be much room for complaint. I visited Murphy’s piece of work next to this, and was informed that it would be finished in about 10 days. The Institute difficulty is to a great extent overcome. A new committee has been elected, consisting of Messrs. Brown, Clover, Clements, Slater, and J. O’Sullivan. At the first meeting Mr Clover was elected chairman and treasurer, and Mr Brown librarian and secretary. All that is wanted now to put things on a square footing is a really first-class entertainment and dance, which by the way are likely to come off at an early date. A literary institution should not have to depend on entertainments, but should be supported by subscriptions.
