This Day. (per united press association.) LAND CONFISCATION. Pungarehu.—lt is reported here that the Government have decided to confiscate sixtythousand acres of land on this coast, as an indemnity for the cost of suppressing the recent threatened disturbance. Boat Accident. Auckland.—A boat containing Mr Saunders, a homoeopaihist, his wife and sister-in-law, capsized yesterday in Judges’ Bay. Fortunately all were saved. Young Churton and a son of Judge Munro rescued Mrs Saunders in an unconscious condition. Presentation to the Hon. GK McLean. Dunedin.—At Waikouaiti yesterday, a presentation was made to the Hon. G. McLean by his late constituents of the Waikouaiti District. The presentation consisted of a large solid silver salver, weighing 50ozs, with inscription expressing satisfaction with his representation of the district in Parliament daring a period of 10 years. Mrs McLean was also presented with a silver bracelet, necklace, locket, brooch, and earrings. Missing Returning Officers. Wellington.— The steamer Stella, which arrived last evening from cruise to Southern lighthouses and the Sounds, reports that Sergt.-major Nelly and Mr Allan, returning officers at Jackson’s Bay, left that place for Hokitika about a fortnight ago, and have not since been heard of. A search party has been out four days without finding any trace of them. Wellington.—Government have no further intelligence of the missing returning officer for Jackson’s Bay. The chief returning officer at Hokitika has requested that the declaration of poll for Jackson’s Bay be postponed a few days. Claims of Old Soldiers. Wellington.—Government have under consideration the appointment of a Commission to consider the land claims of Military Volunteers who took part in wars in New Zealand. Cricket. Christchurch. —Mr Leachwell carried out his bat with a score of 107, in a match against the Dunedin club. Nelson.—The match Wellington v. Nelson has been played here. Wellington’s first innings 62, Nelson 105. Match not finished. Betting and Murder. Hamilton.—Yesterday Hoani Te Kerei was murdered on the racecourse at Oxford, near Cambridge. He was stabbed to the heart with a knife; death instantaneous. The affair is said to have arisen out of a disputed bet of 5s between the deceased and another native. Two natives are in custody. Death from Chloroform. Gisborne.—Dr Percy had been suffering from a severe cough, and by mistake took chloroform instead of the proper cough mixture. He died yesterday, and an inquest will be held. Mr. and Mrs. Hoskins. W cl lington.—Hoskins commenced his season with the “ Colonel,” which proved a great success, and there was a crowded house.
