SCHOOL PRIZES. The pleasant ceremony of distributing prizes to scholars who passed in the annual examination at the Patea School took place this afternoon. Numerous friends and parents attended to lend interest to the scene. His Worship the Mayor, who is also chairman of the School Committee, gave away the prizes. He congratulated the master, Mr Williamson, and his assistants, Miss Gowland and Mr Flood, on the marked improvement manifest in the results of this year’s examination as compared with three previous years. The tone of the school was also such as entitled all concerned to some share of credit. His Worship then handed to each successful scholar a prize purchased out of funds of the late school entertainment, Books, inkstands, and such articles were given ; and to each recipient he said a few encouraging words. The names of those who were to receive prizes are published in another column.

A special prize was given to the most popular and best behaved scholar in the school, the one with most admirers. The children voted by each writing a name on a slip of paper. The one having by far the most votes was Miss Minnie Haycock, She received the prize.

The master selected Eugene M’Carthy as the best behaved boy in the headmaster’s room ; and he received a special prize. The Mayor announced that he would arrange to offer a prize next year to the girls for plain cooking ; also a prize to the boys for the best essay on managing a farm and garden. A month’s holiday follows.
