KAKABAMEA.

(f nU M O Ult COR Re s poxdes t.) Thursday evening. At about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the house occupied by Mr Salmon caught fire. There being no one on the promises, the flames soon got such hold as to render extinguishing them quite impossible. Several neighbors did their utmost to save the household goods, but owing to the high wind which caused the fire to spread rapidly, only a few articles of little value were rescued. The house was insured for £l5O, and the furniture for £SO. The school was examined yesterday afternoon by Mr Inspector Foulis, who expressed himself much better pleased with the results than those of last year. The following are the names of the candidates who passed the various standards : Standard I.—Eight presented. Passed : Gertrude Burke, Emma Clover, Edith Brown, Lavinia Hansen, John Williamson, Nelson Mcßae. Standard ll.—Nino presented. Passed : Norah O’Shanassy, Fanny Taylor, Annie Willliaineon, Walter Powdrell, Richard Taylor, Archibald Brodie, John Ludlam. Standard 111.—Bight presented. Passed : Christina Wilson, Cecil Hawken, Oswoll Hawken, William Taylor, John Michael Burke. Standard IV.—One candidate : Fanny, Stanford, who passed. The nows from the Aroha goldfield, Waikato, is very encouraging, the newly discovered reef giving indications at numerous points of being richly auriferous.
