This Day. (I’EK UNITED I’UESS ASSOCIATION.) Fire at Ashburton. Cooksou’s stables and Tart’s saddler’s shop were destroyed by tiro at 2-30 on Saturday morning. Saunders’s buildings, one of (he largest blocks in town, had a narrow escape, the danger being chiefly averted by efforts of the lire brigade. Origin of fire unknown. Earthquake Shocks. Westport. A sharp shock of earthquake felt here at 7-30 this morning. Pictures on walls swung about, and window-weights rattled. Hokitika. The shock was also felt at Hokitika at 7-35, duration mins., direction S. to N. Lyttelton. A very heavy shock of earthquake felt at Lyttelton this morning, at 7-35. It is said to be the most severe felt since 1879• Grey mouth. Two sharp and distinct shocks of earthquake, the heaviest over experienced here, were felt this morning at 7-33 ; the first soock west to east, the second north to south. Houses were visibly shaken but no damage. Shocks were also felt at Ahaura. A telegram described them as “fearful.” Lyell. A smart shock of eartbquade here at 7-37 this morning ; vibration east and west. Ministerial. Wellington. Hon. Mr Oliver leaves for the South this afternoon.
