Nominations for Parliament.
WANGANUI: A SURPRISE. The nominations for Wanganui town electorate took place yesterday. Mr J. Ballance was proposed by Colonel McDonnell, seconded by Mr C. S. Cross. Mr W. H. Watt was proposed by Mr Joseph Chadwick, who said that it was only within the last half hour that Mr Watt had decided to stand in opposition to Mr Ballance. (Voice : “ Dry up» Joe,” and laughter.) Mr Watt had suffered troubles for the town of Wanganui in its early days, and gave it everything lie could do. The electors should not throw cold water on him. (Laughter.) No one could say a word against Mr Watt, and he would be returned by a greater majority than that which put him in as Mayor last year. He could stand a beating—(You’ll get it) —and the electors should return one not a stranger or a novice in the Assembly. (Voice; He never spoke a word.) Mr J. Bennie seconded Mr Watt. Mr Ballance then made a brief address. Mr Watt spoke a few minutes, saying it would be a disgrace if Mr Ballance were allowed a walk over. Mr Bryce and Mr Ballance having been on opposite sides in the House, the district had been disfranchised, and he wanted to put an end to that. He had received a requisition from a few of the leading citizens of the town, and he asked the voters to trust his actions, not his words.
