Opening Land.
A meeting was held this afternoon, at Mr Cow era’s office, by invitation to principal residents, for urging the opening of a road line through the Wbenuakura block, and the building of a bridge to connect roads already made. The Mayor, who initiated the meeting, was present; also Messrs Mihoy, Gibson, Tennent, Norman, Mahony, and Eyton. Others who intended to be present were prevented from attending. Mr Tennent was voted to the chair. The Mayor proposed : “That a committee consisting of Mr Gibson, Mr Eyton, and the mover, be formed for the purpose of preparing a petition to the Ministers of Lands and Public Works, praying that a bridge be erected over the Whenuakura river, and the opening of the Momahaki and Kaitangiwhenua blocks.” Mr Gibson and Mr Norman said wool from the Waverley district had been carted to Patea until the railway got open to Waverley. The motion was agreed to. The Mayor drew attention to the importance of opening the Otoia-Opaku block, there being % great deal of available land which would be enhanced in value by roads. The Mayor also mentioned incidentally, that the interests of the port and district are being injured by the Harbor Board imposing a shilling rate on tonnage, for a purpose which did not seem urgent. After other remarks on the importance of promoting in every way the commercial interests of the port and district, the meeting terminated.
