(per united press association,) Auckland, Oct. 17th. Lord Chandcrboys, Lord Dufferin’s son, has just beaten Byron and Leandor’s swim from Sestos to Abj'dos. He swam across from Therapia to Blekos in a little less than one hour. The Land League have unanimously adopted resolutions calling on farmers to prove their sympathy for the laborers by erecting dwellings for them, and enabling them to live in something like comfort. A conflict has taken place in Dublin between the police and public, which was caused by some soldiers making some insulting remarks about the Pope. Fifteen persons were wounded. Count Jourdeville, belonging to one of the oldest families of the French Legitimist nobility, has been arrested for stealing a carnage and horses in Spain, selling them, and leaving the country. An American paper says that Dr. Tanner is not dead.

In Arizona the Indians muster 7000 fighting men. Forest fires occurred over a large portion of the State ot Michigan, and swept several villages away, inhabited chiefly by recently arrived Canadians. A thousand lives were lost. The flies were checked by rain. Mason, the warder who attempted to shoot Guiteau, was tried by Court-martial. The guards had drawn lots. General Sherman, referring to the affair, says ; The law must lake its course, or mob law on the frontier could claim immunity. The air ship, Great Northwest, containing five journalists, a member of the signal service, and Professor King, was launched at Indianapolis. It is believed the attempt to cross the Atlantic will fail.
