The Parihaka Meeting.
(per united press association.) n Pungarehu, Oct.' 17th. All the returned prisoners having marched in, Te Wbiti commenced his address at 10 o’clock.
The following are extracts from Te Whiti’s address:
At my word the fishes ■ wriggle in the sea, the earth shakes, and the sea quivers. The blood ot the prophets is lying on the earth, and will shake every generation. It is not a great nation nor a large hand that will put down the power this 'day. It is caused by God. The greater nation and the little nation will diminish this day. There is none to soothe my trouble. Not until it is finished. The hand of God will stretch forth, and raise up this generation. It was said in ancient times do not be frightened. Listen to this word. The trouble will be uplifted in this day. Strife will make it straight. The only thing to make it straight, nothing else will make it straight but strife. It does not matter if thousands stand at Pungarehu they will be broken. Peace has been on earth by me, but it has not been listened to by great nations. If you are vexed about your land come to me, come close. There is nothing but war. I am sure within and dark in every year. 1 will not listen to the law because within ray heart I am dark this day. Every year I have been saying—be patient. If it is the spade that is in your hand—strike. No matter what is in your hand—strike with it. My heart is dark within rne. If the land is black with men it will shake them off. This platform will be always full from one generation to another; If Pungarehu be dug with trenches or filled with guns it will be broken. It will not be left for another generation. If the Maori looks for good now he will not find it. All the kings on earth will shout when this happens. It will be done in this day. My word will be the law in this day. The law will be straight, it wiil not be turned to the north or the south what I have said in any direction. There is only us to keep the law, and keep it straight. What I have said is never to look at the height or the strength. It will be all broken down There will not be any work of man left this day. Not one good thing by man will be left. It will be all turned away and destroyed. God will be on earth in these days, for ever and ever. The rich and the full man must depart. It will not be a year, but to-day the strike will be on the earth. The spear will not be for a man. Every generation must be crushed. There will not be one left. The man that comes to strike will be killed himself. This hand is small but every generation will be broken. This day, this day, will be one of boasting. There is one will subdue, for I am determined, I am angry. The trouble will be for man and for all generations. My word will not be turned away from the north to the south. The gun will be broken. The name only of the land that used to be ours is left this day. The sea will dry up, and the four parts of the earth will shake. Thousands of men at Pungarehu will fall this day. Tohu said : It is not me or you that have the strength this day, but God. We are only talking, talking about strife. There is no one to quieten 'me. Hundreds and thousands that come to fight with me will be dispersed. This gathering cannot be broken up by thousands or millions. If thousands come to Pungarehu they will be dispersed by this assembly. This word is true. We will go and be the ones to meet those that are coming. If it is like other times, what use is there in more talking ? I will lift up strife this day, and it will not be put back. Peace will not be proclaimed till the earth shakes and man drops off. There will not be a bright spot. All will be darkness. This word that has been said by Te Whiti is true. The earth will shake and the sea will quiver. The word is not false, but true. ' This is the wisdom
we have been learning all this year. Never mind how small we are, our greatness and our smallness have been foretold. It is not the trouble that is making us small. The hand will be stretched forth, and the occupants of the land will be shaken off. The gates of Parihaka are open. They will not be closed night or day. None of these people will feel the point of the sword. The door is open in front of us, and the man in front of us too. The lion’s whelps are on the mountain tops. They arc crying out. Their mouths are open and they are shouting. Who cares for their shouting. Their necks will be little, and they will be strung up no matter how the lions shout. Bring all your strength, bring all your guns this day. There is nothing to keep it back. The door is open and there is none to shut the gates that will be open. The man that is come to kill is standing in front of us. Behind is the talk. This day there will be a large gathering. It will be not a small one. The horse riders will fall this day. All leaning against the shoulders of a horse will fall this day. If there are thousands at Pungarehu they would be all scattered.
