PUBLIC OPINION.
Contributions, Letters, Inquiries and Answers thereto, are invited on Farming. Commerce, Politics, and matters of interest to the Patea district. Names of writers need not be printed. FIRST MAYOR. “You arc too absolute, Coriolanus.,’ I think the above would apply very aptly to one of the candidates for the mayorality. Do not all that gentleman’s past public actions lead one up to such an idea ? Recollect that he opposed the wishes of the Waimate settlers for the management of their own roads—a very reasonable request, though it did not suit that gentleman’s idea of absolute rule. Did he not also oppose the wishes of the people of Patea when they wanted to form a borough ? and yet he rushed first in the field to ask our suffrages for the mayoralty. Is this consistent ? I think* with Shakesperc, quoting from the same p!ay, Honor and policy, like unsevered friends, Do go together,” That gentleman’s honor can hardly be discussed ; but as to his policy, I do not recollect one single political action of bis that either town or country has approved of, or been benefitted by. I believe be would submit to almost any humiliation to gain his end in this case. He would even come with his “ knee bussing the stones ” —unlike Coriolanus, who would neither ask nor'beg a voice. But wait until after the election ; then he will rage very much like that ancient Tribune ; “ You common cry of curs ! whose breath I hate As reek o’ the rotten fens, whose loves I prize As the dead carcases of unburied men That do corrupt my air—l banish ye !”
ASdiles—“ The people’s enemy is gone.” iEmnE.
The contract for railway extension from Waverley to Patea should be put in hand without further delay. The Government have fixed the route, as mentioned in another column, and having got the money voted, they should push on the work. The section to Manutahi also needs more energy applied for its early completion. A pleasant effervescing drink in warm weather is Zoedone, a novelty which is kept in stock by Mr Gower, chemist.
