WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Whenuahura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Wednesday. The entertainment in aid of the funds of the School Uommiitee took place on Monday last, in the Town Hall. The Hall was well filled, and the programme was gone through in a very satisfactory manner. Hie programme consisted of readings, recitations, songs, and instrumental pieces. The recitations given by two young ladies were extremely well rendered.
The Waii •oa Light Horse commenced their week’s drill on Monday last, and the township presents quite a martial appearance with so many red-coated warriors about the place. It is the intention of the troop to give a ball on Friday next. Several recruits have joined the troop since the commencement of the drill. It is a pity the whole of the troop are not clothed in uniform, as it greatly mars the effect of the different evolutions to see a trooper here and there in civilian clothes. The Government have at last given instructions to the R.M. to hold the Court sittings at Waverley again, the manager of the Town Hall Company having received notice from the department to that effect. It has taken a long time to decide tiiis question. There will be a large number of cases to start with, the Road Board intending to have a fieldday so soon as the Court sits. I observe that Waverley is included in the list of towns that come under the new Town Districts Act, which comes into . force on the Ist Jannary, 1882. This Act is a very useful one, as it considerably simplifies the manner of working the Local Board. It does away with the old Provincial ordinances, though parts of the Act are virtually the same. I see the Chairman of the County Council has called a meeting for Thursday, 13th instant, to consider the question of merging the Road districts into the County. Settlers will no doubt roll up in force to this meeting, as it is a question of considerable importance.
