Special and. General. BOAT UPSET at OPUNAKI. {From our Correspondent.) On Sunday an accident occurred at Opunaki by upsetting of a boat in the Bay. Some men were engaged discharging cargo of the steamer Tui, when the boat capsized, throwing men and cargo into the surf. The men succeeded in reaching the reef after much difficulty. The boat was much damaged, and all the cargo lost. AUCKLAND. Aug 23. The inward ’Frisco mail arrived at 2.30 this afternoon. The Waikato Turf Club’s receipts for past year were £914. WELLINGTON. Smuggled tobacco in seven boxes was found under a house in Frederick-strect-The police watched the “ plant” several days, but no one turned up. Walter L°e, who occupied the house, is in custody on suspicion. SHAM PARAEFIN. Mr Skey, Government analyst, has tested the supposed deposit of paraffin at Wniapu, and found 50 per cent, of valueless hydrocarbon. NELSON. SERIOUS fire. August 22. The new and handsome residence of Mr Gibbs, has been burned down, through bursting of a kerosine lamp. House and furniture insured for £3OO. Indignation meetings are being held to protesi against the treatment of Nelson in the Representation Bill, which would deprive this province of three representatives. POST OFFICE ROBBERIES. Napier, 23rd. A clerk in Post-office, named Rendell, is charged with wholesale robberies. He had opened many letters, and 30 skeleton keys were found on him.
