HAWERA.
The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Manutahi and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. The Rinking Club opened on Saturday evening at the Town Hall. There was a good muster, and some good rinkists among them, but of course the novice element was there, and caused a good deal of amusement. It is amusing to see with what persistency Mr Dale tries to damage Hawera or anything Hawera. No doubt he feels sore that we should lessen his power in the district by division, but had he acted fairly by this end of the district throughout, probably the petition for a separate County would never have been made. Fancy him stating, with a degree of authentic information, that the railway would most likely go from Nonnanby to Manutahi, and that Hawera to Nonnanby would be simply a branch line ; but I think we can afford to let such authorities assail us and still live. There is one thing I would wish to point out to the settlers in the proposed new County, and that is that if they do not take particular care the present Patea County Council will levy a rate before the new County is formed, and of course spend the money in their own County. As proof of this, see how eager the chairman is to get the time extended for the Waimate valuation for the Council and not the Road Board.
